Project Description – A Virginia paper mill has a cyclone that they use as a paper pulper that had worn a ring around the blade that, in turn, wore down into the stainless steel and needed to be repaired.

Application - Repair a cyclone paper pulper

Industry - Paper-Pulp

ContractorCreative Maintenance Solutions, Inc.

Problem - a Virginia paper mill has a cyclone that they use as a paper pulper, They do get a lot of abrasive things in there that people throw in suck as engine blacks, cement blocks, etc. This has worn a ring around the blade that wore down into the stainless steel. The ring was about 4 inches wide and a depth of an average of 1.5” and 90” in diameter, but also worn through in some areas. G&B insulation came in and grit blasted the ring. The other issue was they had water intrusion coming in via pipe leak as well as the breach in the worn ring in the stainless.

Solution - After grit blasting they used a torch to both heat up the steel (which was at 68 degrees F) to approximately 100 degrees F, and to try to dry out the intruding water. The worn ring was then cleaned with brake clean. Belzona 1311 was mixed up and applied. It took 8 units to fill in the gap.

The cyclone had to be put back into service very quickly and the Belzona product only had about 4.5 hours to cure. They mixed a full unit at a time and the stainless substrate was heated to approximately 100 degrees F.

The only other option was to line weld a new piece of stainless in it’s place, but that would also require removing the blade, plate and o-ring, so this was a quicker longer lasting solution

Product Applied - Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal)

Product Detail – Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) is a 2-part epoxy-based repair composite designed for metal repair and protection against the effects of erosion and corrosion. This solvent free repair composite has excellent chemical resistance and will bond to all metals and most other rigid surfaces. It is easy to mix and apply without the need for specialist tools and it cures at room temperature eliminating the need for hot work. It is ideally suited to be overcoated with Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) to ensure long lasting performance.

Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) can also be used as a high strength structural adhesive for metal bonding and to create irregular load bearing shims.
